"I had some intense dreams about creating images like this. This is the result of trying to interpret what I could remember. It is more of a feeling of being in between a state of awake and asleep is what I am conveying. The beginning of the sleep cycle, and is a relatively light stage of sleep. Stage 1 can be considered a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. In Stage 1, the brain produces high amplitude theta waves, which are very slow brain waves. This period of sleep lasts only a brief time (around 5-10 minutes). If you awaken someone during this stage, they might report that they weren't really asleep.
There was a storm rolling in the light was really flat, but that's what I was looking for. The beach was quite empty and there was a cold breeze pushing in front of the storm, making for this gray haze coming from offshore. I would normally bring out my 10 stop ND (neutral density) filter but my exposure times would have reach into 60 or more seconds, leaving the ocean waters very flat and smooth. I wanted to convey more motion and texture so I used a 6 stop ND to get the shorter exposure times I was looking. I was shooting from 4 to 8 second exposure to capture the movement in the water without losing its stormy character."
