Description

I know this may sound made up but the night before I took this I had an intense dream about creating an image like this. I woke up knowing that I had to get out to shoot something and try to recreate what I had dreamt. This is the result of trying to interpret what I could remember. I guess it’s more of a feeling than an image that I am try to convey.

Awaken

Awaken

This image has been sitting on my hard drive for a quite a while. I wasn't sure what to do with it until a couple of nights ago I had some intense dreams about creating an images like this. The image was taken in the late afternoon as the sunset was setting. Even though it is the day is turning into night it evokes the feeling of waking up from a nice restful night of sleep, hence the title: Awaken.

Drift Away

Drift Away

I know this may sound a bit fake but the night before I took the initial image for this series I had some intense dreams about creating an images like this. This is the results of trying to interpret what I could remember. It is more of a feeling of being in between a state of awake and asleep, that I am try to convey. The beginning of the sleep cycle, and is a relatively light stage of sleep. Stage 1 can be considered a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. In Stage 1, the brain produces high amplitude theta waves, which are very slow brain waves. This period of sleep lasts only a brief time (around 5-10 minutes). If you awaken someone during this stage, they might report that they weren't really asleep.

There was a storm rolling in the light was really flat but just what I was looking for. The beach was quite empty and there was a cold breeze pushing in front of the storm making for this gray hazy coming from offshore. I would normally bring out my 10 stop ND (neutral density) filter but my exposure times would have reach into 60 or more seconds, leaving the ocean waters very flat and smooth. I wanted to convey more motion and texture so I used a 6 stop ND to get the shorter exposure times I was looking. I was shooting from 4 to 8 second exposure to capture the movement in the water without losing its stormy character.

I really love the stormy conditions and the mood it sets. Hardly anyone on the beach and definitely not a time where many photographers would be heading out to capture the sunset. I try to find the beauty where most would not think to look. This image is great example of that philosophy.
